Learning to roll a kayak

I had a couple of recommendations that it was well worth trying a pool session in the kayak. It has given me the opportunity to try all sorts of kayaking safety drills including T-rescues, X-rescues, paddle rolls and hand rolls. It has given me a massive confidence boost learning such skills in a controlled environment that I can then work on in open water. I included a short clip of some of my practice session!

Quest is getting ready for a retit

I am aware that I have not been out on Quest since July, whilst I feel bad for this I suspect that there
are many other boats that get even less use. However today I cleared out the cabin on Quest to get ready for a complete refit. Inevitably jobs take a lot longer than you think, I aim to start work in December and aim to complete the work by May, 6 months should be enough even for a procrastinator like me!

Kayaking at Surfleet

Continuing our exploration of local paddling spots, myself and Ryan once again donned our spray decks (Ryan has finally got one) and headed for a paddle at Surfleet.

Kayaking at Crowland

Time to see what Ryan's boat can actually do, or more to the point what Ryan can do. A potter up the Welland from Crowland turned into a nice 8 mile jaunt on a lovely evening.
We learnt that its a lot easier to paddle downstream (duh), that my key for the locks on the River nene, also allows me access to the slipways and Ryan really needs a spray deck! Next up Surfleet

Christening a kayak

Today Ryan brought his new kayak down to Tallington lakes. After a somewhat shaky start (Ryan fell in trying to get in his boat), we had a good few hours paddling so he could get used to his dagger axis elite. Its almost identical to my boat but a lot more shiny! We also talked of trips we would like to do in the future and the possibility of kayak camping, so watch this space!
